Reversing a condensing  steam engine reverses the vacuum pump causing  unwanted  pressure  in  the  condenser, which will slow and stop the engine.  A simple system of four check valves will permit the vacuum pump to remove water and air from the condenser and deliver it to the Hot well.  The piping system is installed with the check valves in their operating position.
