It was Mason Saunders who was responsible of the development of the "Mase 22" model steam and electric launch. Mase had had an unfortunate experience when his Fay Bowen steam launch turned turtle and sank during some very inclement weather on Lake George. His resolve was to have a new steam launch that could cope with bad weather and high seas so that his boat would never again disappear from beneath him. Mase had spotted a picture of our tugboat Kathy 22 and felt that this was the hull he had been looking for. A visit to our Boatshop and a few discussions led to the conclusion that the Kathy 22 hull was what Mase needed. The result of these efforts has been the Model Mase 22 launches of which seventeen 22 foot versions, as well as a 25 footer, and five 30 footers have been built. An excellent example of the old adage that "Necessity is the mother of Invention".

At Left: A closing view of Pamelaine on her Sea Trials. It is easy to see why the Mase 22 has become such an admired steamboat. Stable, roomy, and dependable; she has earned a leading place in marine steam lore.
